A Dermal therapists (don’t confuse this with a dermal clinician) scope of practice includes laser and light based treatments, epidermal resurfacing procedures and microneedling. To become a dermal therapist you need to complete SHB50121 Diploma of Beauty Therapy followed by the AABT5022 Advanced Laser IPL & Dermal Therapies.
  • Dermal Clinician: A Dermal Clinician is an allied health professional specialising in skin management and care. To become qualified, a Clinician will study a four year Bachelor of Health Science in Dermal Therapies, or a Bachelor of Dermal Science. A degree qualification in dermal science is highly esteemed within the beauty industry, with top-tier businesses seeking to hire experienced Dermal Clinicians. These professionals are adept at conducting sophisticated skin treatments, including laser/IPL, chemical peels, skin needling, radio frequency treatments, LED light therapy, and High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU).

How Do I Become a Dermal Clinician in Australia?

To become a dermal clinician in Australia, it typically takes four years of study. This includes completing a four-year Bachelor of Health Science in Dermal Therapies or a Bachelor of Dermal Science​​. At some institutions, students can achieve up to three qualifications within this four-year period, including a Diploma of Beauty Therapy in the first year, an Associate Degree in Applied Health Science (Dermal Therapy) in the second and third years, and a Bachelor of Applied Health Science (Clinical Aesthetics) in the fourth year​​.

The typical starting point for many in the beauty industry is the Diploma of Beauty Therapy, which can often lead to further advancement through a university pathway in Dermal Science.

How Long Does the Dermal Course: Evolution of Beauty take?
